“US” Establishes GMMTV’s Position in the Thai GL Scene

“US”, adapted from the novel of the same name by the renowned Thai author Chao Pla Noy (เพชรไพลิน), is GMMTV’s third GL production following 23.5 When the Earth Is Spinning Around and Pluto. Premiering right after Pluto concluded, the series immediately propelled the popularity of Thai GL series to new heights.

Emi and Bonnie take on their first leading roles in a GL series. Their natural performances and heartfelt chemistry quickly captured fans’ hearts once the show aired, solidifying GMMTV’s presence in the competitive Thai GL market. In addition to the growing popularity of the two main leads, View and Mim, who portrayed the secondary couple, also developed a remarkable chemistry over time.

Both on-screen and off-screen, fans are captivated by Emi and Bonnie’s interactions. According to fellow cast members, Emi and Bonnie were inseparable during filming, which explains their effortless chemistry. It’s no surprise that the director practically needed sunglasses! Although GMMTV’s next two GL projects won’t feature EmiBonnie, the strong connection between the two hints at a very promising future.

Synopsis (Spoiler-Free)

The story follows Dokrak (played by Bonnie), a young woman taking a gap year and working part-time at a coffee shop. There, she meets Pam (played by Emi), a dentistry intern, and secretly develops a crush on her. Hoping to find excuses to interact more, Dokrak often eats sweets before her dental visits, just so Pam would scold her a little more. For Dokrak, it was a pure, silent admiration—something she never intended to confess.

One day, her beloved brother Kawi (played by Sing) asks for her help in pursuing Pam. Unable to refuse him, Dokrak agrees. Skilled at hiding her feelings, she can only watch, pretending nothing is wrong, as Pam and Kawi grow closer and eventually start dating.

Dokrak knows she must not fall for her brother’s girlfriend—but how long can she keep her feelings buried?

EmiBonnie’s First GL Lead Roles Earn High Praise

Taking on their first GL leading roles, Emi and Bonnie received widespread acclaim for their nuanced and natural acting. Many intimate emotional scenes were performed with such ease and familiarity that there was never a hint of awkwardness. In post-show interviews, both actresses shared that some of the couple’s interactions were improvised. Behind-the-scenes footage often captured moments where the director had to intervene to stop their overly affectionate behavior—it’s clear why the director practically needed sunglasses!

Their naturally beautiful voices have also fueled fans’ excitement for live performances. Tickets for EmiBonnie’s first overseas fan meeting in Taipei sold out immediately in May. They will next perform at the Blush Blossom Fan Fest in late June, holding two back-to-back events comparable to large-scale concerts. Lucky fans who scored tickets are in for an unforgettable experience.

Director’s Signature Quiet Style: A Film-Like Warm Brown Aesthetic

“US” is presented with a cinematic beauty, using an unhurried narrative pace to gradually build tension, while love blossoms amid turmoil. The emotional conflicts are carefully layered, leaving a lasting impression on viewers. Shot in a 2.35:1 ratio and enhanced with film-like cinematography and warm brown tones, the series firmly establishes the director’s signature visual style.

Director Fon Kanittha Kwunyoo, who previously helmed the GL series 23.5 When the Earth Is Spinning Around, gained widespread acclaim for capturing pure romance within a school setting. Fon’s portfolio spans a variety of genres, including general dramas, BL, and GL series. Her recent work, High School Frenemy, focusing on brotherhood bonds, became one of 2024’s hottest series and earned the “Best Series of the Year” award at the Thailand Box Office Awards.

From 23.5 When the Earth Is Spinning Around to High School Frenemy, Fon’s storytelling approach remains slow yet steady, excelling in drawing out the actors’ best performances and adding emotional weight to the narrative. While the first episode of 23.5 had moments that felt slightly slow-paced, and some scenes illustrating online chats felt a bit awkward, the adorable chemistry between leads and supporting characters eventually pushed the story to a satisfying emotional peak. In the end, the slow buildup proved highly effective.

This steady narrative style also shines in High School Frenemy. Across its 16 episodes, the story follows two protagonists whose deep bond causes them to break apart and reunite repeatedly. Despite the slow pacing—with countless rooftop meetings at school—just when viewers might consider giving up, the raw emotional performances always pulled them back in. Behind-the-scenes footage reveals that the director often allowed scenes to run longer than scripted, a method that helped capture deeper, more authentic emotions.

Compared to 23.5 When the Earth Is Spinning Around, High School Frenemy already showcased stronger cinematic elements, but in US, the filmic style is even more refined. Beyond adjusting the aspect ratio, the series masterfully uses long shots to set the tone, notably in the opening scene where Dokrak runs and plays in the rain—an elegant, atmospheric introduction.

Conclusion

When GMMTV first released the teaser trailer for US, it was already clear the show would surpass the popularity of its previous GL dramas. Although Emi and Bonnie had only recently joined GMMTV—and Bonnie had very few previous acting credits—the company’s decision to cast them demonstrated remarkable foresight.

To avoid spoilers, it’s highly recommended to first watch the official 4-minute teaser.
